    Elm Wood

Scientific name: Ulmus / Ulmus minor var. vulgaris

Origin: Elm is a deciduous tree native to southern and eastern Europe.

Ancient Greeks planted Elms for heroes who fell in battle.
The Elm tree used to grow to great heights and could live for 500 years.
Today, Elm is losing its battle to Dutch Elm disease (discovered in 1919). Its dark wood is hard and tough, and was used for boat building.
The Rialto bridge in Venice is built on Elm piles.
